چکیده

This paper provides a generic equation for the evaluation of the maximum earthquake magnitude mmax for a given seismogenic zone or entire region. The equation is capable of generating solutions in different forms, depending on the assumptions of the statistical distribution model and/or the available information regarding past seismicity. It includes the cases (i) when earthquake magnitudes are distributed according to the doubly-truncated Gutenberg-Richter relation, (ii) when the empirical magnitude distribution deviates moderately from the Gutenberg-Richter relation, and (iii) when no specific type of magnitude distribution is assumed. Both synthetic, Monte-Carlo simulated seismic event catalogues, and actual data from Southern California, are used to demonstrate the procedures given for the evaluation of mmax. |The three estimates of mmax for Southern California, obtained by the three procedures mentioned above, are respectively: 8.32 ± 0.43, 8.31 ± 0.42 and 8.34 ± 0.45. All three estimates are nearly identical, although higher than the value 7.99 obtained by FIELD et al. (1999). In general, since the third procedure is non-parametric and does not require specification of the functional form of the magnitude distribution, its estimate of the maximum earthquake magnitude mmax is considered more reliable than the other two which are based on the Gutenberg-Richter relation.

Single station estimation of earthquake early warning parameters by using amplitude envelope curve

In this study, new empirical relationships to estimate key parameters in Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system including magnitude, epicentral distance and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) are introduced based on features of the initial portion of P-wave’s amplitude envelope curve. For this purpose, 226 time series recorded by bore-hole accelerometers of Japanese KiK-net are processed for earthq...

Self-similar earthquake triggering, Båth’s law, and foreshock/aftershock magnitudes: Simulations, theory, and results for southern California

[1] Båth’s law, the observation that the largest aftershock is, on average, 1.2 magnitudes smaller than its main shock, independent of main shock size, suggests some degree of self-similarity in earthquake triggering. This behavior can largely be explained with triggering models in which the increased triggering caused by larger magnitude events is exactly compensated for by their decreased num...

Seismicity of Batubesi Dam at Sorowako Region Based on Earthquake Data and Microtremor Measurement

Batubesi Dam which is located in Sorowako region in the middle part of Sulawesi island had been designed with seismic coefficient about 0.20g. The region constitutes an active earthquake zone with the recurrence frequency and magnitude of the earthquake are relatively high. The region is located on and active fault zone due to lateral fault movement (strike-slip) of Matano fault, Palukoro fault...

Estimation of the Maximum Tire-Road Friction Coefficient

We develop and test a ‘‘slip-based’’ method to estimate the maximum available tire-road friction during braking. The method is based on the hypothesis that the low-slip, low-m parts of the slip curve used during normal driving can indicate the maximum tire-road friction coefficient, mmax . We find support for this hypothesis in the literature and through experiments. The friction estimation alg...

Insights into the Aftershocks and Inter-Seismicity for Some Large Persian Earthquakes

This paper focuses on aftershocks behavior and seismicity along some co-seismic faults for large earthquakes in Iran. The data of aftershocks and seismicity roughly extracted from both the Institute of Geophysics the University of Tehran (IGUT) and International Seismological Center (ISC) catalogs. Apply some essential methods on 43 large earthquakes data; like the depth, magnitude as well as t...
